EAST PROVIDENCE — The string of unsatisfying results for the East Providence High School boys’ soccer team continued as the host Townies opened the week with a wild 5-4 loss to first-place and unbeaten North Kingstown Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 1, at Pierce Stadium.

The visiting Skippers improved to 9-0-0 and with 27 points in the Division I standings. The setback was the third in a row for East Providence, which slumped to 2-3-3 in the D-I ranks. The Townies do still remain within close striking distance of playoff qualification, needing just four points from their remaining seven games.

Tuesday’s game started relatively benignly, remaining scoreless for the better part of the first 30 minutes. North Kingstown began as the more probative side before East Providence was able to counter. The Skippers did get behind the Townies’ defense on a numerous occasions, but E.P. keeper Andrew Mongeon made three nice saves to keep the visitors off the board. The Townies’ opportunities in the Skippers’ final third came off a couple of corners and attempts from distance, but did not end in any shots on frame.

The game came alive late in the opening period as N.K. scored first then added another prior to E.P. scoring once to make it 2-1 at intermission. Out of the break, the contest opened up considerably, each team scoring three times in the final 40 minutes. The Townies chased the score all afternoon, later trailing 3-1, 4-2 and 5-3. The Skippers notched what was the deciding tally in the 65th minute.

Colin Capelo had two of the E.P. goals. Ryan Moniz and Corey Cabral added the others. RJ DeCampos had two assists. Mongeon was credited with eight saves. The Townies put five shots on the N.K. net and had the better of the corners, 5-1.

E.P. is back in action Friday afternoon, Oct. 4, on the road against Portsmouth at 4:45 p.m.
