Two more league games added up to two more wins for the still unbeaten East Providence High School baseball as the Townies played and won a pair of Division II outings last week, improving to 6-0 in the process.

 

The reigning league champs began the stretch with a 2-0 victory over then likewise undefeated Barrington at home on April 15. Tyler Dicecco came out the better of the pitchers' duel on the hill for the locals while Dylan Annicelli got the final two outs to earn the victory. The loss was the first at the time for Barrington, dropping the Eagles to 4-1. 

 

East Providence scored what proved the game-winning tally by plating an unearned run in the bottom of the second. Oliver Andrews reached on an infield single to begin the frame, but Gavin Palombo and Colin Roche both struck out to seemingly stymie the potential rally. But an Eagle miscue during Roche's at bat allowed Andrews to move into the scoring position. He then came around when Barrington erred on Rutkowski's grounder to second.

 

The Eagles nearly got that run back and more immediately, but Dicecco escaped a bases loaded jam in the top of the third. A lead off single, a strikeout, a fielder's choice, a steal, a walk and error loaded them up for Barrington with two out. Dicecco then went to a full count with the next hitter before enticing a groundout to Kyler Lorenz at short for the final out.

 

The Townies tacked on an insurance run in the home half of the fourth. Palombo led off with a single to center. Roche was hit by pitch. Rutkowski dropped sac bunt to the right side advancing both runners. Aidan Martins then hit a solid single to center for the RBI.

 

Dicecco left the game after throwing 110 pitches and getting the first out of the seventh on fly to Nolan Lorenz in right field. Annicelli earned the save but not without a bit of worry. After issuing a pair of walks he then got the second out on a grounder to Andrews at second before getting another flyout to Nolan Lorenz in right for the third and final out.

 

The Townies next spotted visiting Narragansett a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, then gave up no as East Providence sent the Mariners back to South Country with an 8-2 defeat in a D-II outing last Friday afternoon, April 19.

 

'Gansett got to Annicelli to begin the game, using two hits, a walk and a fielder's choice to plate both of its tallies. In the home half, Martins walked and went to third on a Mariner miscure on a Nolan Lorenz grounder. He then stole second to put both in scoring position. Dicecco drove the first run in on a ground out. Lorenz came home on a passed ball to tie it.

 

In the second, East Providence took the lead for keeps with two more tallies. Andrews singled to right to start the rally. Palombo's come-backer to mound was misplayed. Roche dropped a sacrifice bunt to both along. Rutkowski reached on an infield single. Martins drove in Andrews with a sac fly to right then Nolan Lorenz singled to left to bring in Palombo.

 

The Townies added another run in the third then cemented the with three more in fifth to ice the win. Annicelli went six innings, departing in the seventh for Tim Robitaille to get in some throws to get the last three outs in the seventh. 

 

The EPHS boys' lacrosse team dipped to 2-4 in the Division IV ranks after closing last week with an 11-8 loss to Tiverton. Keigan Grant had a hat-trick (3 goals) and two assists for the locals. Zach Kollett and Nathan Capelo each added a pair of goals. Simon Palumbo had a goal and a helper while Brandon Botelho had an assist.

 

"Tough, tough loss. This one stings a little bit," admitted EPHS head coach Zach Pangboprn. "Very close game through the half. We took the lead in the third quarter, and then gave up some extremely costly penalties to let them back in the game and eventually take the lead. The mental aspect of the game is what killed us today, we lost our cool and that resulted in sloppy play. But, we are going to correct that. We know what we have to get better at, we're going to practice it, and then it's just up to executing it day in and day out on game day."

 

The EPHS girls' lacrosse squad played and won its lone Division II outing of last week, a 16-4 defeat of Rogers in Newport. Kenna Wigginton potted four goals to lead the Townies, who improved to 3-2 at the time.

 

Alyssa Karalekas added a hat-trick. Katherine Almeida and Kloey Iacovone each scored twice. Abby Leddy, Dylan Flynn, Kaylee Vieira, Rylee Jackson and Sydney Olson chipped in one apiece. Jayla DaGraca and Rai Flynn split time in the EPHS, each goalie making three saves.

 

The struggles for the EPHS softball team continued last week after the Townies lost both of their Division I games to remain winless in the state's top tier at 0-6.

 

In Narragansett, East Providence dropped an 8-5 decision to host Prout. The Townies took the immediate lead with a run in the top of the first. Trinity Provencher opened the game with a triple to right, then scored on Sylvie Patterson's infield single.

 

EP appeared on target for its first win when the locals scored three more times in the second. Shelby Quinn walked. Audrey Bernard singled to right. Both moved up on the throw in. Casey Delude brought one around with a single to center. Bernard scored on an error. Delude then moved to third on a wild pitch. She was replaced by pinch-runner Natalia Palermo, who later scored on a double steal.

 

The Crusaders began chipping away at their deficit with one in the third and tied it with three in the fourth. EP went back up briefly with a run in the fifth. Emma Boisseau reached on a one-out error. Brennyn Alves entered a pinch runner, moved to second on a wile pitch then scored on Quinn's double to right. But Prout scored four times in the bottom of the frame to go out in front for keeps.

 

In its next outing, visiting Chariho never trailed EPHS after scoring a run in the top of the first then adding a pair in the second en route to a 9-3 win. The Townies cut into the lead by scoring twice in the third, but the Chargers answered with two more tallies in the top of the fourth to regain control of the contest. EP later added its other run in the bottom of the seventh.

 

In the third, Provencher led off with a walk and stole second, then scored on Bernard's homer to right field. In the seventh, Provencher again drew a free pass to open the inning then went to second on a wild pitch. She eventually scored on Mackenzie Pimentel's double to right.

 

When the game was still in play, EP also loaded the bases in second, but did not score. Quinn drew a one out walk. Palermo walked. Quinn stole third and Palermo later followed to second. Alves was hit by a pitch to load them up, but the Townies could not plate a tally.

 

The EPHS boys' volleyball team saw its Division II record level to 3-3 after the Townies lost their only league match of last week, 3-1 on the road to Lincoln. The host Lions won by the scores of 21-25, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-23. DJ Lepine led the locals with 24 kills. Pedro Medeiros chipped in five kills and four blocks.
