EAST PROVIDENCE — East Providence High School winter sports athletes are in the final weeks of their respective seasons, including indoor track and swimming competitors.
City-based track and field athletes head to Boston Saturday, March 4, for the New England Indoor Championship Meet at its traditional home in the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center.
East Providence sends three competitors in boys’ events: Kit Ruddock as the state champion in the 300 meters, who also qualified in the 55 dash, along with Kenaz Ochgwu and Dylan Slavick, who both earned spot in the high jump.
St. Mary Academy-Bay View sends of a trio of female competitors as well and also led by a state champ, Francine Miller in the 600, who is joined by mates Suraily Sam, in the shot put, and Amy Papa, in the 55 meter hurdles.
The second-to-last state title event also takes place Saturday, March 4, when the Interscholastic League presents the boys’ and girls’ swimming championship meet at the Brown University aquatics center in Providence.
The boys’ competition takes place at 9 a.m. followed by the girls at 2 p.m.
EPHS sends two individuals to the respective meets. Nick Capobianco qualified in the boys’ 200 yard medley and 100 yard backstroke. Ines Bendadouda earned a berth in the girls’ 100 yard butterfly.
Benadouda will be joined on the girls' side by swimmers from Bay View and the Providence Country Day-St. Raphael co-op, the latter of whom will also take part in the boys' meet with Capobianco. PCD-SRA won both the girls' and boys' Division IV titles, beating out the EPHS teams in each.
