E.P. school admins still expect early January return to buildings

In-person instruction is scheduled to begin again on January 11

EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence School District expects a return to in-person classes on Monday, Jan, 11, as planned, according to Superintendent Kathryn Crowley.

The district, per a directive by the superintendent, went to virtual instruction for the remainder of the 2020 calendar year in mid-December. Superintendent Crowley, at the December 8 meeting of the School Committee, made the announcement citing staffing issues due to the COVID-19 virus, quarantine procedures and the uptick in the number of cases in the state at the time. Several other districts around the state followed suit.

The Rhode Island Department of Education later issued an updated calendar calling for a staggered return of students to classrooms in January of 2021, saying buildings should reopen starting January 7 and no later than January 15.

The switch to distance learning coincided with Gov. Gina Raimondo’s “pause,” reimplementing several restrictions to ward off the spread of the virus, which at one point saw Rhode Island rank tops in the nation for new cases and deaths per capita.

Superintendent Crowley said on Tuesday, Dec. 29, the focus in district is to return to the classroom to complete the first semester on January 11, but she cautioned saying, “We will see what happens over the next two weeks.”

Since going virtual, the superintendent said the R.I. Department of Health has notified the administration of between 20-25 positive COVID-19 results returned by students and staff in the district.
