Electrical work closes two eastbound I-195 lanes overnight September 3
Will reopen to full traffic in time for September 4 morning rush
PROVIDENCE — Two of the three lanes headed east on the Washington Bridge will be closed overnight Tuesday, Sept. 3, to Wednesday morning, Sept. 4, for electrical work, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced.
The closures are expected to run from 9 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday and be completed in time for the September 4 morning rush hour.
The South Main Street and Exit 1A ramps will also be close. The location of the closure encompasses the I-Way Bridge to the Washington Bridge.
Easterly traffic, ironically, has become the more troublesome direction since it was split into six lanes, three each way, to accommodate westerly traffic upon the shutdown of the westbound Washington Bridge span.
The congestion created with drivers attempting to merge from downtown Providence from the north and Thurbers Avenue from the south has caused daily gridlock on the I-Way Bridge.
