East Providence's Noresca earns national hoops honor

Chosen as NJCAA men's player of the week, sets another new CCRI rebound mark

WARWICK — Thursday, Feb. 13, was memorable for a couple of reasons for East Providence’s Mitchel Noresca, a freshman on the Community College of Rhode Island men’s basketball team.

The East Providence High School product set a new program record for rebounds in a season following his 22-board effort in the Knight’s 101-60 victory Northern Essex Community College.

Noresca came into the game with 374 rebounds, 14 shy of the former mark of 388 set by Walt “Stretch” Edwards during the 1972-73 season. Noresca also finished the evening with a career-high 32 points, going 14-17 from the floor.

Earlier that week, he grabbed 15 rebounds and scored 11 points in 91-85 loss to Holyoke Community College.

For his efforts, he was named the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division III men’s basketball player of the week.

Previously, Noresca broke the school record for rebounds in a single game, grabbing 29 boards in the Knights’ 83-67 victory over visiting Bristol Community College Tuesday night, Feb. 4, in Warwick. Warren Marshall held the former standard of 28 also set in a game against BCC during the 1974-75 season.

This week, the Knights secured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Region XXI Tournament after beating Quincy College 89-73. CCRI improved to 20-10 overall and 16-3 in Region XXI play.
