EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence School District will hold classes Wednesday, Dec. 13, virtually as the city contends with the massive disruption created by the closure of westbound lanes on the Washington Bridge.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Sandra Forand sent out the following notice to familes in the city regarding the situation.
"In consultation with the Mayor and the East Providence Police Department the decision has been made to move to distance learning tomorrow, Wednesday December 13th, due to the excessive travel times and congestion across the city.
"Principals will send out all distance learning information this afternoon (Tuesday, Dec. 12). We will continue to monitor the situation and keep families informed as information becomes available.
"Once again, thank you for your patience and understanding."
Earlier Tuesday, Dec. 12, Forand intiated contact with families while acknowledging "many parents had trouble getting their children to school today and there were significant bus delays at all schools."
In addition, she announced dismissal at East Providence High School would begin an hour earlier at 12:45 p.m. with middle school departing campuses at 2 p.m. Elementary students were expected to remain in classes to the regularly scheduled 3 p.m. dismissal.
Also, afternoon Pre K classes have been canceled due to the excessive travel time.
