EAST PROVIDENCE — Having already canceled in-person instruction for the upcoming Thanksgiving week because of the effects of COVID-19, the East Providence School District administration received word from the Rhode Island Department of Health Sunday evening, Nov. 22, of more positive tests.
Superintendent Kathryn Crowley reported four students and one staff member from four buildings were the latest confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus.
A staff member and pupil at Kent Heights Elementary School tested positive. Students at East Providence High School, Riverside Middle School and Hennessey Elementary School returned the same results.
Late last week, the administration announced all students and staff would conduct instruction through the district’s distance learning program due mostly to staff shortages associated with positive tests or close contacts at a number of buildings.
At the same time, Gov. Gina Raimondo announced she would allow districts to switch to remote instruction entirely for high school students if administrators wished to do so. The governor is urging all districts to continue offering in-person lessons for students in Kindergarten to Grade 8.
East Providence is tentatively scheduled to return to in-building attendance on Monday, Nov. 30.
