PROVIDENCE — Multiple media outlets reported the arrest of an East Providence man by Providence Police Department officers for carrying what was determined to be a loaded handgun on the grounds of the State Capitol during a protest Wednesday night, April 14, over the killing of Daunte Wright by a Minnesota Police officer.

The man was identified as Dennis Torres of Riverside. He was charged with possession of a firearm without a license and was set to be arraigned in District Court Thursday, April 15.

A woman involved in the protest, one of several across the country since Mr. Wright’s death in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center during a traffic stop on April 2, notified PPD of a person carrying what appeared to be a gun.

According to the police report, officers then tracked Mr. Torres as he broached the State House lawn. Upon being confronted by officers, Mr. Torres acknowledged he was in possession of a firearm. Officers then inspected the weapon, described to be a black Taurus 9mm handgun with 12 live rounds, including one in the chamber.
