East Providence girls lacrosse will play for undefeated season, D-3 title

Posted

With graduation just a day away, the sun is also setting on the 2024/2025 East Providence High School sports season.

Only one team remains standing to fight another day — the undefeated girls lacrosse varsity squad, which vanquished Toll Gate in the semifinals on Tuesday by a score of 15-6.

“The team is having an incredible season. They finished the regular season undefeated, and their success continued tonight with a semifinal win,” said coach Nick Boyce. “I am extremely fortunate to coach such a talented group of individuals; both on and off the field. They know this game very well, and continue to improve each and every day. The team motto this season has become ‘Stay Positive’, and that is actually what they are going to continue to do as we prepare for the championship game this weekend.”

The girls will face off against the winner of the match between Smithfield and Cranston East on Friday, June 6. East Providence has beaten Smithfield three times on the season (Smithfield’s only losses, which came by a combined 4 goals in all close games). They’ve beaten Cranston East twice by a combined score of 26-7.

Kloey Iacavone scored 6 goals in the semifinals against Toll Gate. Alyssa Karalekas netted 5 goals (including her 100th goal on the season). Kat Almeida chipped in 2 goals and Sydney Olson and Ella Benson each scored one goal apiece. Goalie Ava Williams had 9 saves on the day.

Baseball makes waves back in D-I
The East Providence baseball squad, back in Division 1 after a few years down at Division 2 (which included a D-2 title win in 2023), made a run for a Cinderella story season that came up just short, as they lost to Cumberland in a nail biter, 6-5 on Friday, May 30.
The team beat Moses Brown 3-0 to begin the playoffs, but then entered the loser’s bracket after falling to South Kingstown 3-0. They battled back last Thursday to move up in the loser’s bracket with a 7-2 win over Cranston West, but Cumberland snuffed out their season.
However, with a 14-8 overall record and a 12-8 finish good enough for 6th in Division 1, it’s a season worth celebrating for Coach Bobby Rodericks.
“Coming up to Division 1 we knew every game would be close and anyone could be beaten at any time. If we ended up .500 as a program, record wise, we would have possibly felt we reached our potential,” Rodericks said. “Earning 14 overall wins may have exceeded our expectations initially but with our pitching being very deep and and our bats having some life throughout the lineup, we proved to be a top team in Division 1 and we will continue to hold our own and give our best effort year in and out for the foreseeable future.”
Rodericks noted the stellar pitching of senior Dylan Annicelli, who went 7-0 in the regular season record and 2-0 in the playoffs. “Because of his impressive stat line he earned himself the Cy Young Award for Division 1,” Rodericks said, adding he would be attending Southern Maine University in the fall and will continue playing baseball.

Volleyball makes it to quarterfinals
The Townies boys’ volleyball squad gave a stellar effort in the quarterfinals on May 29 against La Salle, winning the first and fourth sets, forcing a five-set game and forcing La Salle to work for the victory, which they secured with a 15-9 win in the last set.
Head Coach Daniel Cabral said the season, the first back in Division 1 for the Townies since 2019, was a positive one. The team finished 9-7 overall.
“The team had a great season and were competitive in every match,” he said. “We had a lot of kids work on their game this off season, with many going to camps and playing club volleyball. We were led by seniors Jordan Rodriguez, Brandon Mimande, Antonio Varela, Franklin Carela Lopez, Logan Calouro and Naya Phillip. Underclassmen Ean Williamson, Alex Robinson, Ethan Pereira,Wesley Snead, Caden Corbett and Jayden Santos rounded out the Varsity Squad. The Townies had key wins this season over Cranston West, LaSalle, and Coventry(twice). We look to continue to improve in the 2026 campaign.”

Softball makes a run but comes up short
The East Providence softball team lost in its journey back from the loser’s bracket, falling 4-0 to Pilgrim on Monday, June 2. They had emerged victorious in a true test of grit on Friday, May 30 against Prout, coming back from down 5-0 to ultimately win 7-6. They had beaten Westerly 10-5 to qualify for the tournament.
The Townies finished 10-12 overall and 10-10 in Division 1, finishing in 8th place.
