TAUNTON — The driver in an alleged hit-and-run fatality last week in Seekonk was arraigned in Taunton District Court Monday, Sept. 16, and ordered held on $100,000 bail.
Jeremy Schmidt, 27 and of East Providence, pleaded not guilty to charges including leaving the scene-death resulting, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and marked lane violation. He is scheduled to appear back in court on October 31.
Mr. Schmidt fled the scene after hitting Ms. Vargas with a Jeep Cherokee SUV. The vehicle was later found by police in East Providence. He was arrested in city the following day, Sept. 13. Ms. Vargas was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where she later passed away due to the injuries suffered in the accident.
