William Sousa, 79, of New Bedford, Mass.

William Sousa, 79, of New Bedford, Mass., formerly of Bristol, R.I., passed away, Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021, at home.

Born in Fall River, Mass., he was the son of the late Antony B. and Jenny (Garcia) Sousa.

Mr. Sousa had worked as a construction worker for Rhode Island Laborers Union – Local 271, for 22 years, retiring from a disability in 1989. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards, playing cribbage, bingo and the Bristol Fourth of July Parade.

He is survived by a son, William R. Sousa and his wife Angela of New Bedford, Mass.; a daughter, Rebecca J. Cambrola of Barrington, R.I.; four brothers, Manuel Sousa of Warwick, R.I., Francis Sousa of Bridgewater, Mass., John Sousa of Warren, R.I., and David Sousa of Bristol, R.I.; three sisters, Josephine Sanchas of Warren, R.I., Kathleen Simmons of Warren, R.I., and Florence Sousa of Bristol, R.I.; three grandchildren, Kerry Sousa, Kate Sousa, and Zoe Johnson, and one great-grandchild, Keira Baez. He was also the brother of the late Anthony Sousa, Barbara Sousa, Jennie Bouffard, and Annie Borges.

Arrangements are by Family’s Choice Cremation, 8 Schoolhouse Rd., Warren, where friends will be received on Monday, Nov. 15, 2021, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services and burial will be private.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
