PORTSMOUTH — A 19-year-old Newport man was charged with larceny on Wednesday, Aug. 30.

The arrest was the result of an investigation by the Portsmouth Police Department’s Detective Division in regard to a fraud complaint, and a warrant was issued for the arrest of Michael Darian Griffin, of 193 Park Holm, police said.

At about 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday, members of the Rhode Island State Police/U.S. Marshals Service Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested Griffin at his home.

He was transported to the Portsmouth Police station and charged with larceny of under $10,000, according to police. Griffin was placed in a cell to await his arraignment.

Here are some other recent highlights from the Portsmouth Police report:

Nathanael Pires, 35, of 108 Angell St., Apt. 2, Fall River, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, with damage resulting to an attended vehicle. At about 3:20 p.m., officers responded to a report of an accident in which an operator fled the scene, police said. Officers conducted a followup investigation with Pires at the police station, where it was determined he had knowingly been involved in a motor vehicle accident and failed to stop, police said. Pires was placed in a cell to await transportation to 2nd District Court.

Michael J. Ellis, 47, of 106 Norseman Drive, was arrested on a 2nd District Court bench warrant at his home around 8 p.m. Officers had previous knowledge of the warrant, which was for failure to appear in court, according to police. Ellis was held at the police station pending his arraignment.

Sunday, Sept. 3

Justin Andrew McKenna, 45, of 11 Second School St., Bristol, was charged with driving under the influence, first offense, following a traffic stop on Route 24 North at West Main Road at about 1:25 a.m. McKenna was also cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test, police said.
