The Portsmouth High School girls’ tennis team defeated the defending state champions, Mt. Hope, by a score of 6-1 in a Division II matchup Saturday at home.

The second doubles team of the Huskies’ Ally Picard and Maddie Nash won a three-set tie-breaker over the Patriots’ Abbie Dutra and Mel Williams, 7-6, 6-7, 10-6, for Mt. Hope’s lone win. The Huskies record dropped to 4-1 in the division, but head coach Geoff Keegan said he wasn’t concerned.

“It was more of a competitive match than the score indicates,” Mr. Keegan said. “At the end of the day, we made more unforced errors and let their players take control.”

No matter, the Huskies loss a close match to Portsmouth last year, before ending the season with a state championship.

“Hopefully, history repeats itself,” he said. “We will learn from our mistakes and correct it all, prior to the playoffs.”
