Patricia A. (Coogan) Sousa, 86, passed away at Rhode Island Hospital on June 18, 2020.

A resident of Bristol for the last 63 years, Patricia was born in Bronx, N.Y. She was the wife of the late William “Shike” Sousa. She was the daughter of the late Edward J. Coogan and Helen M. (Schneider) Coogan.

Patricia was a voracious reader, a lover of poetry and crossword puzzles. She was also an avid volunteer and history buff, serving as docent at Blithewold Gardens for many years. Committed to keeping the art of letter writing alive, Pat always had a pile of stamps at the ready and never forgot to send a card to celebrate a special occasion to all those she loved.

Pat really loved her family, near and far, and she was a devoted friend. She leaves nieces, nephews, lifelong and new friends alike.

In addition to her husband and parents, Patricia was also predeceased by her siblings, Peter B. Coogan and Helyn Linden.

Patricia is survived by her daughters, Kellyann Sousa (Stephanie Mencer) of Indianapolis, Ind., and Kristin Sousa (Xavier Garcia) of Barcelona, Spain. Her memory will live on through her one grandchild, Jordi Garcia Sousa, also of Barcelona. She also leaves her sister, Paula C. Longo (Nicholas), of Westerly, R.I.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, July 6, 2020, at 11:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 330 Wood St., Bristol, Rhode Island. Burial will follow in Newport Memorial Park. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Franklin Court Independent Living in Patricia’s name. The address: 150 Franklin St., Unit 5, Bristol, RI 02809. Contributions will be used for activities, helping those who might not be able to afford them and/or to offset costs.
