The Mt. Hope softball team came from behind to beat Narragansett 5-2 in the first round of the Division II playoffs on Friday afternoon. The 17-1 Huskies who lost the last game of the season to Prout and placed second in Division II South will face Toll Gate in the quarterfinals today, Monday June 6, at Mt. Hope High School at 5 p.m.

Mt. Hope ace Reily Amaral and the Huskies defense shut down the Mariners until they scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Amaral struck out eight Mariners and allowed five hits and two walks during the seven inning game.

The bottom of the order started a four run rally in the bottom of the fifth inning for Mt. Hope. Huskies eight hitter Sammy Malafronte singled and Julia Allen reached on an error. Malafronte attempted to steal third. The ball was thrown into left field and Malafronte scored to tie the game 2-2. Allen moved to third base due to the error.

Elsa White (two hits, two runs scored and an RBI) smacked a hit to center field to plate Allen and give the Huskies a 3-2 lead. Sydney Crowell added to the carnage with an RBI double to left field. White easily came around to score to make it 4-2. Crowell took third on a passed ball and scored on a ground out by Jayda Sylvia to boost the lead to 5-2. The Huskies threatened to score more with clean up hitter Grace Stephenson and Amaral the team’s five hitter due up. Stephenson struck out for the second out of the inning. Amaral singled to right field and Logan Levesque who caught a pair of difficult fly balls defensively, walked to give the Huskies runners at first and second base. But Mariners pitcher Dharma Parks struck out Huskies second baseman Alice Grantham to end the inning.
