Entering the final few days of the regular season, the Mt. Hope High School boys' lacrosse team appeared to have just about locked up first place in the Division III standings and the top seed in the upcoming league championship playoffs with a pair of wins last week.
The victories for the unbeaten Huskies, 12-0 in D-III, included a 10-4 triumph over their nearest competitor in the league, Lincoln High, and a 13-2 beating of Toll Gate.
Ben Browne had a game-best four goals in the win over the Lions, finishing off a season-sweep of then second-place Lincoln. The Huskies entered the last week of regular season play with a commanding lead over the Lions in the power index used (2.542-2.092) to determine playoff seeding.
Will Stimpson added a hat-trick for the locals. Nathan Carpenter scored twice while Charlie Knapman assisted on a pair of goals. Ethan Labollita made 14 saves in the Mt. Hope net.
In the one-side win over Toll Gate, Knapman led the way with four tallies. Carpenter had three while Browne and Noah Sweeney added two apiece. Browne also had three helpers. Carpenter had two. Aidan Pereira won 14 of 18 face-offs. Labollita was credited with a dozen stops.
The Huskies were set to finish their slate with games against Narragansett, the third-place team in D-III, and an out-of-conference affair against Portsmouth, ranked third in D-II with a 9-4 record.
Boys' volleyball
Mt. Hope and Portsmouth are the top sides in Division III volleyball, and were set to determine who wins the regular season title and with the top seed in the upcoming league championship tournament with a match this week.
The Huskies held a slim lead over the Patriots in the power rankings (2.989-2.842), but Portsmouth has the head-to-head lead over the locals with its 3-2 victory in a meeting earlier in the spring.
The sides meet in the final match of the regular season Wednesday, May 21, in Portsmouth, to determine the top seed in the playoffs.
Mt. Hope swept Mt. Pleasant by the scores of 25-11, 25-16 and 25-17. Nate Fisher led the locals with eight kills, 12 digs and five service aces. Jacob Betres had seven kills and two aces. Matt Moran chipped in six kills and five digs.
The Huskies sent their seniors out in winning style with a 25-13, 25-15 and 25-15 win over North Providence. Three of the future graduates honored that evening set the pace for the locals. Fisher had 15 kills and 12 digs. Betres, eight and 13, respectively. And Nate Calouro had four aces and 10 digs.
Mt. Hope improved to 15-2 in the league and 16-2 overall following 3-1 win over Davies Tech Monday night, May 19.
The Huskies won by the scores of 25-16, 25-23, 19-25 and 25-12. Fisher had 20 kills and 10 digs for the locals. Dylan Shaw had nine kills and five digs. DeOliveira set for 42 points and chipped in 10 digs.
Golf
The Mt. Hope High golf team racked up a couple of more Eastern Division match wins, but saw its chances of earning one of the seven available spots into next week's state championship tournament fall off as the Huskies' team scoring average dipped despite the victories.
Mt. Hope carded a total of 166 strokes in defeating Portsmouth and Bay View to open last week at home over the front side of Swansea Country Club. Ben Peters, who remains on track to a spot into the individual portion of states, was the day's medallist with a 2-over par score of 38.
The Huskies swept their second of three matches last week, shooting a 172 at Newport Country Club against host Rogers with Providence Country Day. Jackson Howland posted the low score of the afternoon while leading the locals with a plus-7, 42.
Mt. Hope traveled to Montaup C.C. to close out the span, besting both host Tiverton and Montaup with a 173 total. Howland again paced the Huskies with a 5-over score of 41. Middletown's Nathan Phelan had the day's low round, a 2-over 38.
Aside from the five regular season division champs, the seven other teams with the low match average qualify for states. The Huskies entered the final week of their schedule ranked 10th in the seven-team race for the remaining spots.
Girls' lacrosse
The Mt. Hope High girls' lacrosse team went winless last week in three outings. Adriana Botelho had a hat-trick in a loss to the Lincoln School. Grace Zamil netted a pair. Lola Silva scored three of the Huskies' goals in a defeat against Burrillville. Botelho and Catherine Frawley had two each. And Botelho and Silva potted a pair apiece in losing effort against Cumberland.
Baseball
The Mt. Hope High baseball nine ended a long losing skid to close last week with a 5-4 victory over Portsmouth on the road. The Huskies rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh to earn their second league win of the spring.
Trace Dubois scored twice had two hits, one a double, for the locals. Logan Dubois and Jack Thompson each drove in runs. Jacob Ferreira, Brian Abbruzzi and Dylan Scarborough scored the other three tallies. Abbruzzi threw four innings of two-hit relief to earn the victory on the mound.
Softball
The Mt. Hope High softball squad has been winding down its 2025 season in the recent days. Sophia Haberman had two hits in a setback to South Kingstown. Hailey Ferreira had the lone hit for the locals in a loss to West Warwick.
