Meet Mt. Hope High School’s Top Ten students

Mt. Hope High School recently identified its Top Ten students from the Class of 2019, which graduated last weekend. They are listed here in order:

Nicholas Januario

The class valedictorian, Nicholas will be attending Tufts University in the fall. He’s a member of both the Rhode Island and National honor societies. A four-year member of the cross country team and caption in his senior year, he earned Rhode Island All-Class and All-Division honors and qualified for the New England Regional Championships during his junior year. He also ran outdoor track for four year and was captain of the team the past two years.

He earned “Best in Fair” at the school science fair, and captured third place at the Rhode Island Science Fair. He was named to the Rhode Island All-State Band and Southern New England Honor Band. He was also a four-year member of Class of 2019 Executive Board.
Nicholas has been a volunteer for Save Bristol Harbor and Save the Bay.

Laura Thurber

Passionate about sciences and using them to give back to the community and society, particularly in regard to environmental and human health research and development, Laura will attend University of Connecticut and will major in Biomedical Engineering. A Rensselaer Medal recipient, science fair winner, and STEM Endorsement recipient, Laura has distinguished herself in Science and Mathematics in a variety of ways. Her extracurricular involvement includes, but is not limited to, National Honor Society (VP), Executive Board, Sustainability/Environmental Club, and golf.

Mackenzie Boucher

Passionate about learning, science, sports, friendships, the environment, children and music, Mackenzie Boucher is well-balanced and excels in all facets of life. Mackenzie plans to attend URI and will major in Biology/Pre-med, where she will merge her love of science with her love for children as an aspiring Pediatric Cardiologist. Her extracurricular involvement includes, but is not limited to, National Honor Society, R.I. Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society (president), Sustainability/Environmental Club (president), Executive Board, Symphonic Band (captain), Marching Band (captain), Jazz Band, Cross Country (captain), Lacrosse (captain), Basketball and WYSA Soccer.

Sara Johnson

Sara will be attending Trinity College in Connecticut this fall. A Rhode Island and National Honor Society member, she is also Tutor Coordinator for the National Honor Society. She performed in the Concert (Grade 9), Symphonic (10, 11, 12), and Marching bands (9, 10, 11, 12). She was a two-year member of the school’s Debate Team and the Foreign Language Honor Society. She earned a black belt in karate from Rocky’s American Karate, and was co-captain of the advanced performance team at Rocky’s. She is also a volunteer CCD instructor.

Caley Patton

Caley is thoughtful, passionate, hard-working, intrinsically motivated, and she is dedicated to pursuing a degree in Physical Therapy. Her extracurricular involvement includes but is not limited to participation in Executive Board (Grades 10, 11 and 12), National Honor Society (11 and 12), Concert/Marching Band (9-12), Symphonic Band (10-12) and Mt. Hope High School’s Dance Team (9-12), where she was captain of the team. In addition to her in-school activities, Caley demonstrates her sustained commitment to dance at a local studio, where she is responsible for choreographing, teaching and mentoring younger students in hip hop, contemporary, jazz and ballet. 

Savannah DaSilva

Savannah will be attending Cornell University in the fall, pursuing a Pre-Med degree, with a minor in Spanish Language. President of the National Honor Society and treasurer of the Foreign Language Honor Society, she is also a member of the Environmental Club, Science Olympiad and her class Executive Board. Savannah also performed with the Mt Hope Masqueraders.

Her extensive record of community service includes volunteering more than 100 hours at St. Anne’s Hospital, serving as a Chemistry tutor at Mt. Hope, volunteering 40 hours with the Footlights Theater Company, helping Road Races with class EBOARD, and doing beach cleanups with the environmental club. She has also worked as a swim instructor for children from infant to age 12.

Brooke Desmarais

Brooke will be attending Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y. A member of the Rhode Island and National honor societies, she interned with a speech pathologist at Guiteras Elementary School during her senior year. She is a two-year member of the Foreign Language Honor Society, a four-year member of the girls’ soccer team, a volunteer referee and coach for Bristol Youth Soccer Association and a volunteer referee for the Rhode Island Special Olympics Soccer Tournament.

Lila Saye

Passionate about science, Lila aspires to work at the CDC, specializing in infectious diseases to identify cures to help people live healthier lives. Motivated by dreams of the future, Lila engages in her learning while working diligently to achieve her goals. A distinguishing fact about Lila is that she was a participant in Brown’s Pre-College Program, where she was one of 24 qualifying applicants out of hundreds of applicants. Lila plans to attend Roger Williams University and will major in Public Health. Her extracurricular involvement includes, but is not limited to, National Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society (president), Math Team (president), Science Olympiad, and Guitar Ensemble.  

Kaitlin Quinn

Passionate about health and wellness, Kaitlin Quinn plans to merge her love of science with her passion for health by pursuing a career as an orthodontist. Kaitlin will attend Loyola University in Maryland and will major in Biology (Pre-med). Working to the best of her ability, Kaitlin approaches learning with a steadfast commitment, making it look effortless even when it is not. Her extracurricular involvement includes, but is not limited to, National Honor Society, Executive Board, and Gymnastics, an area in which she has numerous awards and honors.

Hannah Simonds

Passionate about music, Hannah plans to attend Rhode Island College and will major in Music Education. Her extracurricular involvement includes, but is not limited to, National Honor Society, Dance and Girl Scouts. In addition, Hannah is a member of Guitar Ensemble (president), Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Marching Band and Jazz Band. Inspired to travel, Hannah loves experiencing different cultures and their music and plans to travel the world.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
