Matthew G. Maetozo, a native of Bristol

Matthew G. Maetozo, Ph.D., a native of Bristol, R.I. and a veteran of World War II, died at the age of 93 on June 18, 2020, at the Bailey Family Center for Caring in St. Augustine, Fla.

He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Springfield University in 1951. An M.S. degree was earned at the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. degree at Springfield.

He was an outstanding high school athlete before entering the U.S. Coast Guard.

While a student at Springfield University, he participated in three sports and was president of his class. He signed a professional contract with the New York Giants, playing in Canada and the United States.

Dr. Maetozo retired in 1991 as Dean, College of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics, within the Pennsylvania State University Association. He was very active in his profession in many leadership capacities.

He became noted as a consultant to government personnel and institutions of higher learning, both in the United States and abroad, regarding the organization and administration of athletics. He was invited to 56 countries, including two around-the-world professional tours.

Professional commitments included the International Olympic Academy in Greece, the U.S. Olympic Academy, the U.S. Sports Academy and the Olympic Games.

Written contributions encompassed more than 100 published articles in professional journals, as well as collaboration in writing of ten books. He received wide recognition for his research regarding the professional preparation of athletic coaches and in the area of international comparative physical education and sport. His articles have appeared in professional journals in Switzerland, Germany, South Korea, Republic of China, Greece and the United States.

He was a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and the American and International Association of Sport and Physical Education.

Dr. Maetozo has been identified in Outstanding Educators in the U.S.A., Dictionary of International Biographies and Who’s Who in Education.

Acknowledgements include awards for advisory services from the governments of Mexico, Denmark, Sweden, Greece, South Korea and the former Soviet Union.

As a Sport Specialist representing the U.S. Sports Academy, he lectured in Bahrain, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Professional honors include distinguished awards from Springfield University, the American Association of HPE&R and Dean Emeritus.

Dr. Maetozo is survived by a sister. Also by three children and four grandchildren.

Burial will be in Jacksonville National Cemetery, Jacksonville, Fla.
