Maria Estrella Sousa, 93, of Bristol

Maria Estrella (Correia) Sousa, 93, of Orchard Street, Bristol, passed away on Nov. 23, 2020, at Silver Creek Manor. She was the wife of the late Hermano Medeiros Sousa.

Born in Sta. Antonio, Nordeste, St. Michael, she was the daughter of the late Jacinto Correia and Maria daConceicao (Cabral) daCosta. She is survived by her children: Alcida Pacheco and her husband Paul of Bristol, Cidalisa Costa and her husband Francisco of Bristol, and Paul Sousa and his wife Kara of Bristol. She was the grandmother of: Tanya Pacheco, P.J. Pacheco, Melissa Costa, Ian Costa, Brady Sousa and Teah Sousa; and great-grandmother of Khaleesi Pacheco, Hannhleesi Pacheco and Roman Pacheco. She was the sister of Manuel Correia, Antonio Correia, Carlos Correia, Jose Correia, Noberto Correia and Eulalia Raposo.

Mrs. Sousa was educated in Portugal and employed by R & J Manufacturing and I. Shalom Handkerchief before retiring. She enjoyed being the center of her grandchildren’s lives and cooking for the whole family any chance she could.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood St. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Mask use is required and social distancing guidelines will be followed.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
