Maria de Lordes Cordeiro, 94, of Bristol

Maria de Lordes (Almeida) Cordeiro, 94, of Garfield Avenue passed away on Oct. 14, 2019, at Rhode Island Hospital. She was the wife of the late Serafim Cordeiro.   

Born in Relva, St. Michael, Azores, she was the daughter of the late Semiao and Fortunata (Almeida) Cordeiro. She is survived by her children, Fortunata Couto and her husband Carlos, Lucia Cordeiro, and Antero Cordeiro and his wife Ana; grandchildren, Paul Couto, Russell Couto, Stacy Medeiros, and Trista Amaral; and great-grandchildren, Myah Medeiros, Liam Medeiros, Alannah Amaral and Dylan Amaral. She was the sister of the late Jose Almeida Cordeiro, Sylvestre Almeida Cordeiro and Manuel Almeida Cordeiro.

Mrs. Cordeiro was educated in Portugal and employed by American Tourister for 25 years before retiring.

Her funeral services were held Oct. 17 from the George Lima Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev. Marinaldo Batista at St. Elizabeth’s Church. The offertory gifts were presented by Paul Couto and Stacy Medeiros.

Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Paul Couto, Russell Couto, Manuel Antonio Almeida, Armando Cordeiro, Antero Cordeiro and Jose Manuel Cordeiro.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
