Maria da Conceicao Arruda, 92, of Bristol

Maria da Conceicao (Martins Carvalho) Arruda, 92, of Third Street passed away on Dec. 6, 2019, at Rhode Island Hospital. She was the wife of the late Antonio Cordeiro Arruda.   

Born in Sta. Barbara, St. Antonio, St. Michael, Azores, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Maria (Barreiro) Carvalho. She is survived by her children, Zelia DeAlmeida and her husband Mario, Maria de Fatima daCamara and her husband Luis Albert, and Maria do Carmo Romero and her husband Alex. She was the grandmother of Sharon Medeiros, Mario DeAlmeida Jr., Shawn DeAlmeida, Luis daCamara, Marco daCamara, Tiago daCamara, Alex Romero Jr., Andrew Romero and Adam Romero; and great-grandmother of Lucas Medeiros, Arianna Medeiros, Stella deAlmeida and Sophie deAlmeida. She was the mother of the late Conceicao de Jesus Arruda and Maria de Lourdes Arruda and grandmother of the late Joseph Romero.

Mrs. Arruda was self-employed as a housekeeper after coming to the United States and made hand woven rugs while living in Portugal.

Her funeral services were held Dec. 11 from the George Lima Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by the Rev. Jose Rocha at St. Elizabeth’s Church. Liturgical readings were by Alex Romero Jr. and Shawn DeAlmeida. The Prayer of the Faithful was read by Mario DeAlmeida, and the offertory gifts were presented by Sharon Medeiros, Adam Romero and Andrew Romero. The eulogies were given by Shawn DeAlmeida and Mario DeAlmeida.

Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Mario DeAlmeida, Mario De Almeida Jr., Shawn DeAlmeida, Alex Romero, Alex Romero Jr. and Kyle Medeiros.
