A Bristol man was taken to the ACI after an allegedly violent confrontation with multiple victims and two police officers led to his arrest on felony assault and kidnapping charges.

Durval J. Cordeiro, 50, of 1 Redic Ct. was arrested on Saturday, Jan. 2, after police were called to his residence at 9:42 a.m. According to the report filed by Patrolman Angelo Greco, when the officer arrived at the home one of the residents stepped outside and reported that Mr. Cordeiro was inside and preventing her mother, Mr. Greco’s fiancé, from leaving the house. The officer could see inside the partially open door and observed the victim on the second floor of the house, begging to be allowed to leave, with Mr. Cordeiro standing in front of the doorway.

The patrolman instructed Mr. Cordeiro to open the door completely and allow the woman to leave. Mr. Durval allegedly refused, yelled expletives at the officer and told him to leave the property. Mr. Cordeiro also allegedly stepped outside and yelled in the officer’s face that he was positive for COVID-19, while not wearing a mask.

The officer attempted to step into the house, and Mr. Cordeiro tried to slam the door shut. The officer prevented the door from being closed and grabbed Mr. Cordeiro in an attempt bring him under control. At that point three more Bristol officers arrived on scene and one of the patrolmen joined Officer Greco in the tussle.

While they were wrestling with the suspect, both patrolmen received minor injuries. One had his leg and ankle slammed in the door, while the other had his hand injured. They eventually got him into handcuffs but he resisted being placed into the back seat of a cruiser. Three officers eventually forced him into the cruiser.

Officers then began questioning the witnesses on scene, who told of Mr. Cordeiro’s alleged behaviors over the previous two days. One said she had been pushed by Mr. Cordeiro numerous times and that he had been physically and verbally abusive numerous times.

Another told police that Mr. Cordeiro’s allegedly abusive behaviors began when he started drinking on New Year’s Eve and continued until that morning — both the threats and the intoxication. She said that he had been both verbally and physically abusive. She also said Mr. Cordeiro owns two guns and had threatened to use a shotgun against her multiple times. Officer took two guns into custody.

At the Bristol station, Mr. Cordeiro was charged with misdemeanor domestic assault and resisting arrest. He appeared before a bail commissioner and was taken to the ACI.

On Monday, Jan. 4, Mr. Cordeiro appeared in 6th District Court for arraignment. After further investigation following the initial arrest and review by the prosecuting officer, Bristol Police filed nine total charges against him. He was charged with two felony counts of Domestic Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, felony Domestic Kidnapping, two counts of misdemeanor Domestic Assault, Carrying a Weapon While Under the Influence or Liquor and/or Drugs, and two counts of Simple Assault for the assault on the police officers.

At his court arraignment, Mr. Cordeiro’s bail was amended to $70,000 with surety. He was remanded to the ACI, and a pre-arraignment conference was set for April 12.
