As the summer of 2021 comes to a close, activity on the Common continues to be the heartbeat of Bristol. The multi-generational and multi-use gem of the center of Town is abuzz with parents toting their young children to the playground, school-aged students participating in both organized and open play, the sweet sounds of the Concerts on the Common, and the squeaking sneakers of the many active older adults taking their shot at the growing sport of Pickleball.
What hasn’t been seen in a while is the youth of Bristol honing their skills on the most popular basketball court in the East Bay, the Town Common Basketball Court. The Bristol Parks & Recreation Department would love to see that change. If you haven’t heard, the basketball court has received a facelift this summer, complete with a new surface and adjustable backboards.
Due to the generosity of the memorial contributions from the family and friends of Santa “Sandy” Matrone, the Bristol Parks & Recreation Department’s Sandy Matrone Youth Basketball League will be free to Bristol residents in grades 3 through 8. The five-week program is slated to start in late-September. If you are interested in registering your child, please visit the Parks & Recreation page on the Town’s website (www.bristolri.gov), or call us at 401-253-1611. Space will be limited. We are also seeking a program coordinator and volunteers to help assist in making this the best experience possible.
