Letter: With pride and thanks for a wonderful experience

Bristol’s 236th Fourth of July celebration is now part of history, but the memories will last a lifetime! As chief marshals of this year’s celebration, the feeling of pride and honor is one that no one will understand until you yourself experience it. We now know how our dads, Tony, Manny and our Uncle Joe, felt 36 years ago as they led the 200th celebration.

We were happy to have our family and close friends join us as we traveled the red, white and blue through our historic town. Thank you for celebrating with us.

We would like to thank Michele Martins for bestowing this once in a lifetime honor upon us. Thanks to Chuck MacDonough and his group for putting together such a great parade, focused on our military, our veterans and our healthcare heroes.

It was a privilege to step off and lead this momentous effort, especially after the past 16 months. Thank you to all members of the Fourth of July Committee and its volunteers for the great events held throughout the year. There are no words to describe the dedication, time and effort you all give to make this celebration happen. Without you, Bristol would not hold the designation for the oldest continuous celebration in America.

We also extend thanks to law enforcement, first responders, the Town of Bristol, especially the Department of Public Works, and all others who give their time and effort to make the parade and other events happen. Those of you in the community who attend events, purchase merchandise or tickets also help in a huge way to support the celebration. We could go on on, and so if we’ve missed you, thank you also!

Congratulations again to this year’s Patriotic Speaker Margaret (Maggie) Lero Larson, major, USAR, and Hattie Brown Award Recipient Dick Devault, captain, U.S. Navy (retired).

Finally, thanks and much love to our wives, Cyndi, Maggy and Kym, for all of their efforts and their support during this very humbling and honorable experience. We couldn’t have done it without you!

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
