Letter: To be pro-choice, is to be pro-abortion

Permit me to comment on the information provided in the recent Phoenix article by Kristen Ray – “East Bay legislators support Reproductive Privacy Act.” Pro-choice supporters of this horrible abortion bill, like most, if not all, progressive Democrats, want to have their cake and eat it too. The kindest thing I can say is that they are at best disingenuous.

As an example, I, and I hope most residents of this predominantly Catholic state, am pro-life. I believe life begins at the moment of conception and ends at the moment of natural death.

To believe otherwise is to admit, if I am being honest, that I cannot possibly know for certain when life begins. I have no difficulty acknowledging that to be pro-life is to be anti-abortion.

When a baby in growing in his mother’s womb, his or her life is more than a matter of when he is first able to feel pain, or when the first beat of his heart can be heard or the first brain waves can be detected. Viability should never be the determining factor for deciding when it is okay to abort the baby.

Yet, the Reproductive Privacy Act makes a meaningless distinction between abortion pre-viability and post viability. Progressive politicians such as our own state District 68 and 69 representatives, June Speakman and Susan Donovan, both of whom enthusiastically supported this abortion bill, need to get a firmer grip on their beliefs and rationalizations.

Both these ladies are proudly pro-choice. They justify their support for this bill because it simply codifies into state law the Supreme Court’s decision in the case of Roe v. Wade. This new law, if passed by the General Assembly and signed by the governor, would materially change existing state law.

For them, it is not so much about abortion as it is simply protecting a woman’s right to choose and safeguarding women’s reproductive health — hogwash. While Reps. Speakman and Donovan seemingly easily and without any pangs of conscience declare themselves to be pro-choice, they cringe in discomfort at the notion that they may be perceived by others actually to be pro-abortion. I submit that they cannot have it both ways. Either you are for abortions or you are against abortions. Either you are pro-life or you are pro-choice.

The state Senate Judiciary Committee recently held for further study Senate Bill - S152A. It is the companion abortion bill to the Reproductive Privacy Act that recently passed the House because of the support by a majority of pro-abortion legislators.

Abortion is the moral issue of our time that is most deserving of the attention and involvement of every citizen. Call, right and email each member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, House Speaker Mattiello, Senate President Ruggerio and your state representative and senator and express your opposition to any bill that continues to carry out the human carnage of abortion in all its forms, means, methods and expedient rationales.
