This is in response to the Sept. 30 Speak Out call, “Open the Senior Center.” I am a senior who volunteers for the Benjamin Church Senior Center’s lunch program — first in person and since the pandemic, delivering bag lunches.
The Senior Center is currently providing some 35+ bag lunches daily — way more than they could provide in person maintaining social distancing. To provide in person meals, there must be at least 15 participants, and for those familiar with the center, there is not a lot of indoor dining space as there is in other centers. Continuing to deliver bag lunches allows the center to reach more seniors.
I will add that the center has been open daily since the beginning of the pandemic, reaching out to the community providing services that are not always publicly recognized but needed — extra food, clothing, etc. The Senior Center has been providing outdoor exercise programs all summer, has offered outdoor game days, and recently indoor craft programs. The indoor programs are again limited to the space needed to maintain social distancing.
The ladies at the helm have and are doing a remarkable job, and Bristol seniors are lucky to have such dedicated women advocating on their behalf.
