Letter: Story brought back great football memories

To the editor:

The story in last week’s Warren Times-Gazette about Julie Abruzzi brought back some wonderful memories of her Dad. Growing up in Montreal, Canada, our favorite football team, unequalled by any other in Canadian professional football, was the Montreal Allouettes, winners of multiple Grey Cup championships in the pre-1970s era.

The reason that the Al’s, as they were called, were absolutely unbeatable was the perennial trio of Sam Etcheverry at quarterback, Pat Abruzzi as bone crushing fullback and Pat O’Quinn at elusive tight end. This combination assured the team of always getting at least ten yards in two downs because if not, nothing could stop Abruzzi from making a first down.

If only the New England Patriots of today could be so blessed. Their teamwork and creative play-making was a wonder to watch, and as teenagers we couldn’t wait for our folks to buy game-day  tickets.
Thanks for the memories of 60 years ago!
