Letter: Senator's vote the epitome of environmental racism

Posted

To the editor:

State Senator Cindy Coyne's vote "Yes" last week in the RI Senate, on "S 2788," to allow unregulated dirty plastic waste incinerators, (aka "Pyrolysis"), in South Providence is unconscionable. Her vote is the epitome of environmental racism. In Barrington and Bristol, we are trying to fight for the environment not against it. Whom did she represent when she voted "Yes", Big Fossil Fuel or the citizens of Barrington and Bristol? We do not condone loading up our stinking burning plastic anywhere in little densely populated Rhode Island and absolutely not in a low income neighborhood where children already suffer from some of the highest rates of asthma in our nation.

I urge Barrington and Bristol residents to let Senator Coyne know her vote was disgraceful and to ask House Speaker Shekarchi, Rep. Speakman, Rep. Knight, and Rep. Cassar to stop the Pyrolysis bill, H 8089, now being fast-tracked through the House.

Sincerely,

Susannah Holloway
