To the editor:
In the April 9 edition of Sakonnet Times there was an editorial opinion titled "Parents Deserve Rebates.”
While it is true that parents are an integral part of the education process, they do not deserve a rebate due to the fact that they are now forced to take an active roll and actually participate. You'll just have to start doing it a little earlier then when school ends for the summer.
There is no need to enhance the at home classroom with new furniture. The overwhelming majority of homes already have computers, internet, etc. so that does not entail a new or unexpected hardship. For those few with a problem in this area the schools are already taking steps to provide computer and internet access.
Please don't try to require those of us without school age children to pay more for education then we already are required to and don't expect us to refurbish your home to make home schooling easier for you.
The money to fund schools comes from all property owners in a city or town, not just the 20% or so who have children in school. Based on that fact alone, if rebates are given they should be given to every taxpayer, not just those being inconvenienced by school closures.
And by the way, you can certainly utilize your stimulus check to defray any additional expenses associated with your child's education.
