Last week’s editorial makes the strange suggestion that because the schools are closed now, the Town should rebate the equivalent cost of running these schools to the parents of the students. This makes no sense at all.
The schools are still obliged to pay the teachers’ salaries and to maintain the buildings. What about the rest of the Town’s residents who have no children in public schools during the year?
These families do not expect any rebate and get nothing for their share of the public school tax burden anyway. In fact, Bristol and Warren’s students (except for the Rockwell School) rank approximately 14th or 15th in the State compared to surrounding communities. Maybe these parents can help their kids to improve their reading and math skills and their scholastic standing while in quarantine at home, instead of looking for distractions to keep them occupied and ways to avoid paying school taxes.
