Universally we agree that by raising the taxes on rental properties the cost will be passed to the renters. Over time, some of the long-term residents will be pushed to Warren or East Providence, where there are more affordable rentals.
This will leave more vacant rentals available for off-campus housing, where parents will pay the higher rental amount. Over the long term, this tax proposal is likely to backfire.
The solution to affordable rental housing in Bristol is for the town to work with Roger Williams University and move students back on campus and open up more rental inventory to town residents.
