Letter: How about we celebrate successes from our school district?

To the editor:

In the last two weeks there have been a number of letters from individuals criticizing the Bristol Warren Regional School District, specifically blaming the teacher's union, the former Mt. Hope High School principal, and other school administrators for what they perceive to be deficiencies within the district. But while they continually highlight what they consider to be the district's shortcomings, they never highlight the district's successes.

I received my education in the Bristol school system, went on to earn two college degrees with honors, secured a very good job, and retired comfortably at the age of 43. In addition, the Bristol-Warren school system has produced numerous attorneys, physicians, and very successful leaders in the business world, but the critics always conveniently fail to mention those success stories and will also never discuss some of the most common reasons for substandard student performance, such as a lack of parental involvement in their child's education, students for whom English is not their native language, and other various socioeconomic factors.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have received my education in the Bristol public school system from teachers who encouraged me, mentored me, and challenged me to become a better student and a better person on a daily basis. I will forever be indebted to the teachers, administrators, and support staff of the Bristol public schools, and my suggestion to the critics of our public school system who constantly take to the opinion pages of the local newspaper to vent their grievances, is perhaps they should highlight some of the many success stories in the Bristol Warren School District instead of focusing on the shortcomings.
