Letter: Bristol House Tour was a huge success, thanks to many

Posted

On Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024, more than 700 people explored 11 of Bristol’s most beautiful homes on Hope, High, Walley, State, Franklin, and Thames streets. Visitors to the Bristol Historical & Preservation Society’s House Tour 2024 engaged with the homeowners, learned about the histories of the houses, saw amazingly beautiful and unique interiors, and viewed well maintained, though very wet, landscapes.

Many witnessed how lucky Bristol is to have these treasures and why their preservation is so important. Despite the rainy weather, an amazing time was had by all.

But this experience did not flower organically. The historical and preservation society began preparations for the house tour a year in advance. Months ago, the participating homeowners graciously agreed to open their houses, and this past Saturday welcomed an uninterrupted line of visitors over a six-hour span.

More than 50 volunteers served as docents at these houses, while others  served as shuttle van drivers. And many local businesses generously contributed funds and services to financially support this endeavor. Because of these efforts, visitors experienced the lure of Bristol, not the least of which is the supportive nature of a vibrant community coming together to roll up its sleeves to make such an experience possible.

The Bristol Historical & Preservation Society extends its most heartfelt appreciation to everyone who offered their homes and to all who volunteered, provided services, and extended financial support. Funds raised by this event will be used to support increased programming intended to educate the community about Bristol’s significant, involved, and storied history, and about how to care for artifacts and treasures of that history. Thank you.
