The Mt. Hope High School basketball teams entered the final week of the 2024-25 regular season both comfortably in their respective league playoff fields, with the boys actually setting the pace in Division III.
The Huskies began their final stretch atop the revamped D-III playoff qualification metrics even after the locals saw their latest long win streak conclude.
The Huskies, who earlier in the season won six in a row, had their five-game run snapped February 8 with a 65-54 loss to D-II East Greenwich. Mt. Hope was coming off a 68-59 win over Davies Voc on the road February 3 and a 57-48 win over Blackstone Valley Prep at home February 7.
The Huskies, however, got right back to their winning ways to start the new week as the locals edged host Scituate, 58-54, in a D-III outing Monday night, Feb. 10.
Mt. Hope improved to 14-5 overall and 9-2 in the division. The Huskies finished the night with a score of 2.829 in the league power rankings and in first place ahead of Ponaganset in second with a score of 2.511.
Matt McDougall paced Mt. Hope with 15 points in the win over BVP. Lucas Andreozzi added 14.
In the loss to E.G., Maleaq Roderick, slowed by a nagging injury for a time just after the holidays, continued his superb return to form by leading the locals with 18 points. Jack Thompson and Ethan Santerre each chipped in 10. Andreozzi added nine.
Roderick notched a game-best 23 in the Huskies road win over the Spartans. Thompson, who's also been terrific of late, added 18 points. Andreozzi had eight.
The Mt. Hope girls' cagers stopped a recent three-game losing streak with a 49-44 victory over Smithfield Friday, Feb. 7.
The Huskies, who dropped a two-point decision the week prior Roger, began last week with a 43-38 loss to Lincoln High then fell to Scituate, 45-36.
The locals remain well within the Division II playoff power rankings with an 8-6 record in league games and 9-9 overall.
The girls concluded their regular season with road games Tuesday, Feb. 11, in Cumberland at 6 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 13, in Tiverton at 7 p.m.
The boys have just one game remaining, a road game against Providence Country Day Wednesday, Feb. 12, in East Providence. Tip time is 6:30 p.m.
