Husband and wife receive Bristol's Hattie Brown Awards

Jennifer and Brett Mancieri are honored for community work and volunteer spirit

Being selected winners of this year’s Hattie Brown Award certainly fits in with the persona of Brett and Jennifer Mancieri. For this hard-working, community-minded couple, this year’s Fourth of July Celebration has taken on added significance.

“With so many Bristolians who give of themselves to better our community, we truly feel humbled and blessed to accept this award,” said Jenn Mancieri. “We are so grateful for our families and our fire department family who have supported us and molded us into who we are today. We look forward to taking part in all the Fourth of July festivities as a family.”

“The Fourth of July is my favorite time of the year and haven’t missed a parade,” Jenn continued. “I have so many fond memories of my grandparents’ and parents’ traditions and now make my own traditions with my son. The fact that we are now a part of a piece of Bristol’s Fourth of July history truly has not set in.”

The soft-spoken Brett Mancieri echoes the same sentiments.

“This year’s Fourth will be entirely different than years past,” he said. “ I look forward to taking the time out of my everyday chaotic schedule to enjoy all the Fourth festivities, something I have not been unable to do for many years. “

Both Jenn and Brett’s resumes certainly warrant their overwhelming selection as this year’s Hattie Brown Award recipients.

Jenn is a lifelong Bristol resident who attended Bristol schools until freshman year and graduated from Our Lady Of Fatima High School in 1995. She received her Dental Radiology Certification from Boston University in 1998, and is currently employed as a dental assistant for Harborside Family Dental in Riverside.

“I joined the Fire Department in 1995, becoming a rescue member, and received my EMT license in 1997,” she noted, “and served as secretary of the division of EMS, as well as practical instructor, before reaching life member status in 2010.”

As a member of the Ladies Auxiliary since 2000, Jenn is currently serving as president. In addition, she is founder and chairwoman of the Community Aid Fund and Fire Trailer, where her group helps families in need year-round. The trailer is the only one around that can respond to house fires to give families immediate needs.

“In the spirit of community aid,” she added, “I also started The Kick Off to Christmas Community Aid Drive, where last year we helped 82 families within the Bristol Warren school district. I also serve on the Fireman’s Welfare and Relief Committee, where I am vice chairwoman.”

Her other awards include: 2016 recipient of The Vicki Van Voast Award, member of the Bristol Festival Committee, volunteer at St. Elizabeth’s Church, board member of the James D. Reilly Foundation, and social member of the Dreadnaught Hook and Ladder Company.

Married to Brett Mancieri since 2003, the couple has two children: Jake Mancieri and Christopher Gomes.

Brett Mancieri is a lifelong resident of Bristol and attended Bristol schools. He is employed by the Department of Public Works as chief mechanic, and is owner of BAM Powder Coating in Bristol. He joined the Hydraulion Engine & Hose Company of the Bristol Fire Department in 1991, where he is a life member.  He is currently a member of the Fire Police, and was a past member of the Division of the EMS. He also coached Little League baseball from 1993 to 1996.

Brett has volunteered his time to the Fourth of July Committee for many years, making the Soap Box Derby ramp, helping mount and make the trailer of Mr. Potato Head, and making the Soap Box Derby float. He also helps maintain and transport the fire trailer and organizes the outside for the Kick off To Christmas event each year.

Most significantly, in 2002, Brett received a Medal of Valor from the American Legion and a commendation from the Town of Bristol for jumping into the bay in October 2001 to save a man who was trapped in his car.

It’s easy to understand why this couple was selected for this special Fourth of July Celebration award this year, symbolizing the dedication and community-minded efforts for which this award is named.

“Brett and I are so overwhelmed by all of this,” said Jenn. “This is an honor that we will cherish forever.”
