Henry L. Birkenfeld, 79, of Bristol

Henry L. Birkenfeld, 79, of Bristol, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 2020, at St Elizabeth’s Manor. Born in Texas, he was a son of the late Lawrence H. and Lorine (Washburn) Birkenfeld, and beloved husband of Mary Fatima (Labao) Birkenfeld.

Mr. Birkenfeld was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served on the USS Lake Champlain. He retired from Raytheon, where he was a tester/calibrator. He enjoyed gardening and traveling after his retirement.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Kyle R. Birkenfeld and his wife Elizabeth of Warwick; stepson, Matthew J. Andrews of Swansea; and a stepdaughter, Naomi Grant of Bristol. He was the grandfather of four and great-grandfather of three, all of Warwick, R.I. He leaves several siblings: Anthony (Pat); Samuel (Nancy); Virginia (Dan) Podzemny and Magdalene (El) Hill, all of Amarillo, Texas; and Julius (Kathy) of Nazareth, Texas. He was predeceased by brother Charles and sister Irene King. 

Arrangements are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, Dec. 7, 2020, at 11 a.m. in St Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood St., Bristol, RI 02809. Masks must be worn and will be following all COVID restrictions set forth for the “Pause.” Burial with full military honors will be private. Visit wjsmithfh.com.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
