So much of the annual Bristol Fourth of July celebration has been altered, postponed or canceled, but not the 29th Button Contest. The committee that oversees the contest received all its entries, judged the designs and chose three winners.
The overall winner, and official artist for the 2020 Bristol Fourth of July button, is Luke Daniel, a seventh-grader at Kickemuit Middle School. His button shows fireworks over Independence Park. Luke also won this category last year. He is the son of Cherie and Eric Daniel.
The youngest winner is Marissa Cabral, a fifth-grader at Guiteras School. Her drawing of children watching fireworks along Hope Street is the official design for the 2020 celebration. She is the daughter of Mary and Keith Cabral. Marissa won for the kindergarten to Grade 5 age group.
The high school category winner is Hunter Rodriguez, a senior at LaSalle Academy. Hunter, the son of Suzanne and Edgardo Rodriguez, was the overall winner in 2011 and 2012.
Each of the young artists won $50, and Luke won an additional $75. All three of them earn a spot in the July 4 parade, if it is able to take place this year.
