George S. Carinha, 76, of Bristol

George S. Carinha, 76, passed away at Rhode Island Hospital on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021, with his family at his side.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he was the son of the late Mary (Pimental) and the late Antonio S. Carinha.

Raised in Bristol on the corner of State and Center streets, George graduated from Colt Memorial High School in 1962.

George’s love and admiration for God, Country and family was undeniable and unwavering throughout his entire life.

As a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church, he would regularly and faithfully escort his family, to include his children, his mother Mary and mother-in-law Alice to church every Sunday. His wife Suzanne (Correia), sang in the church choir along with her sister Lillian for many years.

George served proudly in the United States Navy as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate stationed at Moffett Field Naval Air Station, California, receiving an honorable discharge. When on leave, George would make the 3,100-mile trip by car back to Bristol to spend time with family and friends.

Upon returning from California, George began dating the love of his life, Suzanne. They married on May 22, 1971, and remained faithfully by each other’s side until George’s passing. Suzanne and George were married for over 49 years.

George worked at Kaiser Aluminum until its closure in 1977. He found his long-term career as a Public Safety Officer for Roger Williams University, retiring in 2014. After retirement, George would commonly say that “Now, every day is a Saturday! What a blessing!” with a smile on his face.

George made a positive impression on everyone he came in contact with, and usually left them laughing at one of his many jokes or one-liners.

George always impressed upon his children to be kind, be respectful, and always help others in need. His humble and kind spirit, his willingness to help others, and his passion for his family and friends were second to none.

George loved to see his grandsons, Hugh and Chet, play football on their traveling competitive team, regularly making trips around New England to watch them. The happiness and joy that Hugh and Chet brought to George (nicknamed Gi to the boys) was palpable every time they were with him.

George was a member of the Elks Club Lodge 1860 and participated in the Hopeworth Bocce League. George could always be heard making jokes with his teammates and competitors alike with a smile on his face and kind eyes behind his “shades.”

He was an avid fan of both circle track (NASCAR)  and ¼ mile (NHRA) drag racing. George enjoyed spending countless Saturday summer nights at Seekonk Speedway with his family for many years. George’s passion for all things “horsepower” has been passed down (along with his signature mustache) to his son, Barry.

In addition to his wife Suzanne, George also leaves his children: Beth A. Whitten (Tyson) and Barry S. Carinha; his grandchildren: Hugh and Chet Whitten; his siblings: Antonio S. Carinha Jr, Rosemary Oliveira (Edgardo); and many extended family and friends.

In death, George is reunited with his parents and his brother Joseph Carinha.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021, at 11 a.m. inside St. Elizabeth Church, 570 Wood St., Bristol. Calling hours and flowers are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
