The Mt. Hope girls tennis team beat Middletown 5-2 during a home match on Tuesday and are back in the win column after suffering their first loss of the season at Portsmouth last Thursday. The team is at the top of Division II with an 8-1 record. The Huskies play at Classical on Thursday afternoon.

Portsmouth 4, Mt. Hope 3

With the wind swirling and the turbine twirling, the Mt. Hope girls tennis team lost a hard fought match to the Patriots, 4-3, at Portsmouth on Thursday afternoon. The loss drops the first place Huskies record to 7-1, and boosts the Patriots record to 4-2 in Division II.

“The match didn't go our way,” said Head Coach Geoff Keegan. “The team had some trouble with the wind and unforced errors. But, we now know what we need to adjust and improve on and it's back to the drawing board to make our improvements and adjustments to our game,” said coach Keegan.

The Huskies went 8-5 last season and lost in the Division II quarterfinals to Ponaganset.

“It didn’t go our way,” said coach Keegan. “It kind of drives us. We have practically the whole team returning this year. The talent is there and the season has gone well so far.”

The match

No. 1 singles player Meg Dolan, 4 singles player Eva White and one doubles team, Ellee Kopecky and Annie Krzywicki took care of business and won their matches for the Huskies.

Dolan playing Portsmouth’s top player, Delaney Lippert, lost the first set, 3-6. Dolan pushed the second set to a tie breaker and won it 7-6 (5) and won a difficult third set 6-4 to win the match.

“She’s a strong consistent left handed player,” said coach Keegan. “Meg is a co-captain. She’s comes to play every match. She may be one of the best players that we’ve had come through the program over the years.”

White beat Portsmouth’s Jaeley Barone in two sets, 6-4, 7-5.

“Eva is a very patient tennis player. She’ll find her opponents weakness and attacks that spot,” said coach Keegan.

No. 1 doubles team, Kopecky and Krzywicki crushed their opponents Sarah Alexander and Olivia Brennan, 6-4, 6-0.

“They will set their opponents up and attack them at the net. I’d put them against any doubles team in the state. They are that good,” coach Keegan said.

The Huskies No. 2 singles player, Jillian Parker lost a three set tie breaker to Portsmouth’s Marielle Chrupcala, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4).

“Parker is a co-captain. She and Meg are captains because they are determined. They are ready to fight, battle and claw their way out of every match to get the win for the team. They are both excellent leaders.”

No. 3 singles Sara Macedo lost her first match this year in two sets to Portsmouth’s Danielle Mazur, 6-1, 6-2.

“Sara is one of those kids who never picked up a racquet till high school,” coach Keegan said. “She has greatly improved the last three years. She’s gritty. She’ll dig and try to keep the ball in play.”

No. 2 doubles team Catie Quesnelle and Marissa lost to Portsmouth’s Brooke Morrissey and Kat Deus in two sets, 6-1, 6-1.

No. 3 doubles team, Ally Picard and Olivia Vezina lost a tough match to Portsmouth’s Melanie Williams and Abbie Dutra, 7-5, 7-6 (4).

“We know as a team that one regular season loss doesn't define us and our team goals,” said coach Keegan. “So while it stings, since we were undefeated going into the match, and of course that would've been nice, we need to come back out on Tuesday and give undefeated Middletown our best game, like the Patriots did to us,” said coach Keegan.
