Eagles skate past Huskies in Medeiros Cup game

Annual event raises money for scholarships

Posted

The Barrington High School boys hockey team outscored Mt. Hope 12-0 in the annual Medeiros Memorial Cup game at Portsmouth Abbey on Wednesday night, Jan. 5.

The game served as a big win for both teams, as they were able to raise additional money for the J.P. Medeiros Jr. Scholarship Fund. Since its inception 20 years ago, the fund has awarded more than $80,000 in scholarships to local boys and girls.

In the game, Barrington built an early lead against the Huskies, as Cody Wood, Tucker Squires and Sam Faulkner each netted first period goals. Faulkner and Wood also tallied assists.

Ben Labreche scored to open the second period, and Faulkner continued to capitalize on opportunities. In fact, Faulkner scored three straight goals — he finished the game with five goals — and helped the Eagles to a 7-0 advantage.

Drake Almeida and Squires each finished the game with two goals, and Brody Carroll also had a goal.

The Medeiros Memorial Cup was named for JP Medeiros, a standout player and Mt. Hope team captain who was killed in a car accident during his freshman year in college. Known for both his play and his sportsmanship, J.P. was also a youth hockey coach and a National Honor Society student.
