Bristol Police: Holiday weekend brings groups, gatherings, hoops and fireworks

Bristol Police had another quiet week in terms of crime but had many calls about groups gathering in both public and private places, including basketball courts, beaches and back yards.

Monday, May 18

At 10:53 a.m., an officer dispersed several people from athletic fields at Mt. Hope High School.

A Wood Street resident reported a past larceny.

An officer investigated a report of a large gathering on Justin Street at 3:17 p.m.

A caller reported a woman throwing clothing out of the upper windows of a residence on High Street at 9:12 p.m. An officer responded and found it was a wife passing items down to her husband.

An officer took a report of a property line dispute on Church Street at 9:19 p.m.

A patrolman advised a resident to turn down music on Doran Avenue at 10:26 p.m.

Tuesday, May 19

Officers investigated a domestic disturbance at the intersection of Broadcommon Road and Gooding Avenue at 2:21 p.m.

Officers assisted at the scene of an accident with injuries at the corner of Metacom Avenue and Robin Drive at 4:49 p.m. Two people were taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

A resident reported a dirt bike racing up and down Fernwood Road at 6:31 p.m.

Wednesday, May 20

Officers dispersed a large group of juveniles who were playing at Veterans’ Park at 2:47 p.m.

Officers investigated a report of a large gathering on King Philip Avenue at 3:53 p.m. It turned out to be five residents in the backyard.

Officers dispersed a large group of juveniles who were playing basketball at Coelho Park off Jenny Lane at 4:13 p.m.

A resident once again reported a large gathering on King Philip Avenue at 6:24 p.m.

Officers dispersed a group of men who were yelling at each other in a Gooding Avenue parking lot at 6:26 p.m.

A caller requested that a group of juveniles be dispersed from the beach area along Shore Road near Gibson Road at 7:09 p.m. They were sent on their way.

Police received another complaint of a large group on King Philip Avenue at 7:14 p.m.

Thursday, May 21

A Griswold Avenue resident called police to get assistance with a snake in their garage at 5:42 p.m.

Officers investigated a report of three juveniles who were not social distancing in the area of Bradford and Wood streets at 6 p.m. They were gone on arrival.

An officer dispersed people from Narrows Point at 11:58 p.m.

Friday, May 22

An officer spoke to a landscaper who was using a tractor at 6:37 a.m. along Bay View Avenue.

After an alleged victim visited police headquarters and reported an assault from the previous day, officers found and arrested Luis M. Arruda, 59, of 47 Lafayette Drive, Bristol. He was charged with domestic simple assault and domestic disorderly conduct and taken to District Court in Providence for arraignment.

After someone reported approximately 16 youths in the area of a dock on Hopeworth Avenue, officers responded and found approximately 10 people. They were dispersed from the area.

A 911 caller reported a fight between two brothers on Harrison Street at 2:33 p.m. Officer responded and found only a verbal dispute. There were no arrests.

A caller reported a woman screaming along Roma Street at 7:54 p.m. Officers responded and found a woman talking loudly on the phone.

Officers responded to Mulberry Road and Ever-Ready Road at 5:52 p.m. for a neighbor dispute. Officer spoke to the parties and there were no arrests.

An officer advised a large group of juveniles in the area of Hope and State streets to practice social distancing at 6:13 p.m.

Officers assisted at the scene of a storage container fire behind the Dollar Treet on Gooding Avenue at 7:07 p.m.

Officers investigated a report of a large gathering outside of a Garfield Avenue residence. They found a small group in the back yard practicing social distancing.

Someone complained of loud yelling on Barnum Street at 8:01 p.m.

Someone reported a suspicious bag in a State Street driveway with a suspicious substance inside. It turned out to be a Ziploc bag with rocks in it.

Officers dispersed people from a gathering on Garfield Avenue at 9:45 p.m.

An officer spoke to someone on Oliver Street after a neighbor reported banging on the floor from an adjacent residence at 9:47 p.m.

An officer spoke to women in a Thames Street driveway who were making noising and playing music at 10:14 p.m.

Saturday, May 23

Police received two calls for fireworks in the Melrose Drive area at 9:21 p.m.

A Wood Street resident called to complain about arguing, loud music and stomping on the floor from an adjacent apartment at 9:27 p.m.

At 11:52 p.m., a caller reported a dog on Primrose Drive that had been barking for an hour.

Sunday, May 24

A caller from John Street reported that someone was walking around outside her residence at 12:54 a.m. Officers responded but did not find anyone.

A Metacom Avenue resident called police to report that a group of juveniles were at his house threatening to “jump” his son. They left in a car, but officers caught up with them, questioned them and had their parents some to the scene to pick them up and take them home.

Officers dispersed people from Evelyn Drive at 12:11 p.m.

Officers dispersed juveniles who took down barricades to play basketball at Coelho Park off Jenny Lane at 12:50 p.m.

Officers dispersed several people who were playing basketball at the town sports complex off Asylum Road at 2:06 p.m.

A tipster complained of 15 chickens in the backyard of a Buttonwood Street residence.

A caller reported a large group of juveniles on the private beach at the bottom of Hopeworth Avenue at 7 p.m., and he did not believe they belonged there. Officers responded but the group was gone before they arrived.

Officers dispersed a group of teenagers who were playing loud music and hanging around on the playground at Colt School at 5:22 p.m.

Officers advised a man who was outside yelling and screaming at neighbors in the area of Roma and Wood streets at 5:30 p.m.

Someone reported an older blue Camry speeding up and down the streets, spinning tires and taking corners quickly in the area of St. Anna Avenue at 6:14 p.m.

A caller reported a man outside yelling, using profanity and threatening neighbors on Roma Street at 6:44 p.m.

An officer advised Monterey Road residents to turn down loud music at 7:22 p.m.

A caller reported a large gathering of people, fireworks and a large fire in the backyard of a residence on Thompson Avenue at 7:23 p.m.

Officers spoke to a large gathering of people on Garfield Avenue at 9:16 p.m.

Officers advised residents after receiving a complaint about a large gathering with loud music on St. Elizabeth Street at 9:18 p.m.

A King Philip Avenue resident filed a nuisance complaint at 10:10 p.m.

Officers spoke to a large gathering of people with loud music on Corte Real Drive at 10:32 p.m.
