BRISTOL — The Mt. Hope High School football team made it two wins in as many home games to date and in a row after the Huskies defeated visiting Pilgrim, 24-29, Friday night, Oct. 4, at the Vendituoli Complex.
JJ Pimental rushed for two scores, kicked three extra points and also booted a 26-yard field goal to pace the locals, who improved to 2-2 in the Division III ranks and won their second outing of a four-game homestand.
Zach Borges accounted for the other Mt. Hope touchdown, a four-yard run to cap off the Huskies' opening drive of the game. The 60-yard march put the locals in the lead. They added to it before the end of the first quarter, when Pimental's three-pointer made it 10-0.
The Huskies would take a 24-13 lead to intermission as the teams traded scores. The visiting Patriots trimmed their deficit to 10-7 before Pimental found the endzone capped Mt. Hope's response with his first TD run on a four-yard burst. His second PAT kick made it 16-7.
Pilgrim seemingly made things much tighter before the break, the guests reaching the endzone again to make it 17-13 with just 90 seconds to go in the second quarter.
Again, though, the hosts answered with a near flawless "two-minute" offense. This time, Pimental scored a two-yard rush and his third extra point extended the Huskies' lead to 11 at the half.
"We played hard for the full 48 minutes. It was a very big win for us," said MHHS head coach Shane Parker. "Pilgrim made a couple of crazy plays to extend drives, but we answered every score."
Pimental, a senior, finished his with 121 total rush yards on 18 carried. Borges, a freshman, carried five times for 20 yards, including the first quarter TD.
Of Pimental's overall effort, Parker said, "He ran very hard, even after (the Pilgrim defense) started putting eight and nine guys in the box."
As for the rest of the Huskies' offense, Mt. Hope quarterback Ethan Martel completed five of his eight passing attempts for 66 yards. Brennan Perry made three catches for 52 yards. Pimental had one for 12 and Borges one for two.
Defensively, Brody Cavalieri led the Huskies with 12 solo tackles. Preston Brodd had 11 and Robert Annis eight. Evan Rodrigues, Rocco Palazio and Colin Maloney had five each.
Mt. Hope plays the third game of its four-week stay at home Thursday night, Oct. 10, when the Huskies host Chariho at 6 o'clock. The winless Chargers enter the contest 0-4 and coming off a 37-14 loss to Johnston last week.
