Virginia A. Williamson, 92, of Barrington

Virginia A. Williamson, 92, of Alfred Drowne Road, Barrington, died Saturday, May 23, 2020. Born in Hartford, Conn., Virginia attended Bristol schools, graduating in 1945. She later attended Syracuse University, graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (cum laude) in fabric design. She was a member of Tau Sigma Delta, an honorary fraternity in architecture and allied arts. In 1953, she graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a bachelor of science degree in art education. In 1965, she earned a masters degree in art education.

She was an art teacher in the Barrington schools for 33 years, retiring in June of 1988. She was a member of the National Education Association (retired), the Barrington Congregational Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution (Bristol Chapter), OES (Martha Washington Chapter), Roger Williams Family Association and Beta Sigma Phi, an international women’s organization.

She leaves a niece and two nephews.

Funeral services will be private per request of the family. The family requests that donations be made to the Barrington Senior Center, 281 County Road, Barrington, RI, 02806. Please visit smithmason.com for full obituary and online condolences.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
