Troop 2 boasts two more Eagle Scouts

John Marshall Lemos and Michael Zeleznik honored during recent ceremony

Posted

John Marshall Lemos and Michael Zeleznik received the highest honor of Scouts BSA at a ceremony held at Barrington Town Hall on Memorial Day weekend.

Through hard work, community service and leadership, both young men from Troop 2 Barrington joined a small group of hard-working, talented and dedicated young adults who have earned the Eagle Scout award.

John is a sophomore at Barrington High School. Since joining Troop 2, he has immersed himself in scouting experiences. Some of the most memorable have been his outdoor adventures where he’s seen a meteor shower, climbed Mt. Washington three times in the winter, and pitched a tent at historic West Point and Gettysburg.  John’s enthusiasm and dedication have earned him the distinct honor of holding Troop 2’s new record for merit badges, 68 in total. He is a member of the scouting leadership organization National Youth Leadership Training and the scouting service society Order of the Arrow.

A community service project that is planned, executed and its impact measured, is just one of many rigorous requirements needed to achieve Eagle Scout status. Fewer than 7 percent of scouts attain this honor.

John secured donated materials and led a team of scouts to build and install 70 tomato cages at the McCoy Community Farm last summer. This volunteer-run farm donates all produce grown on its one-acre lot to local food pantries, soup kitchens and the RI Community Food Bank.

John is the son of Renee and Danny Lemos of Doane Road.

Michael Zeleznik is a junior at Barrington High School and has served as Quartermaster and a Patrol Leader for Troop 2. Among his many scouting accomplishments, Michael completed a 10-day hike throughout the rugged terrain of New Mexico at the Scout’s Philmont Reservation.

In addition to attending school and being a Boy Scout, Michael is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America and an entrepreneur. Michael has owned his own business, Mike’s Greenscaping, for seven years. He employs two part-time workers, along with putting in full-time hours himself. He has grown his business over the years and now serves 40 Barrington customers.

Michael put that experience as a landscaper to work for his Eagle Scout project by identifying a landscaping issue at Barrington Congregational Church and gathered resources to correct it. After securing donations from local businesses, he used tools from his own landscaping company, borrowed a cement mixer, and employed a dozen younger scouts to install granite curbing along the flower beds to provide a barrier against sand/salt run-off and to improve the landscaping aesthetic.

Michael is the son of Kim and Bob Zeleznik of Ida Court.

Troop 2 celebrates its 100-year anniversary in 2020. Now counting 57 active scouts among its ranks, this troop is committed to leadership development and service to the Barrington community.

Led by Scout Master Wade Ogden, the scouts meet Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. at Barrington Congregational Church during the academic year and welcome boys from throughout the community to participate in team-building, leadership and value development activities.
