Barrington officials are asking residents to refrain from using rock salt to melt ice and snow on the new sidewalks along Lincoln Avenue.
The town newsletter stated that rock salt can damage surfaces due to its corrosive nature.
“When used on new sidewalks, the water soaks into concrete, then can re-freeze when the temperature drops allowing for concrete to expand, exerting internal pressure that causes tiny cracks to form. Over time, this can cause small pieces of the sidewalk surface to flake off, scarring the sidewalk surface,” stated the newsletter.
Officials are recommending that in addition to shoveling or snow-blowing the sidewalks, residents can also use sand, which will improve traction and is the most eco-friendly option.
