More than a dozen Barrington High School student-athletes finished among the top three competitors in all of Rhode Island in a variety of events at the outdoor track state championships over the weekend.
And a handful of Eagles proved to be the best all around.
Barrington High School junior Caleb Satisfield won two events at states — he was number one in the long jump with a distance of 22 feet, 4 inches, and the high jump with a height of 6 feet, 6 inches. Meanwhile, Ellie Noonan showed she was unmatched for a second straight year in the pole vault. She defended her state title with a first place finish..
Satisfield was quick to praise others for his strong performance at the championship meet.
“I always have my teammates to support me throughout everything,” Satisfield said. “Shea (Parish), Danny (Serna), and everybody, Colton (Glass). I appreciate them. They got me to where I am right now. And God. Especially.”
Satisfield helped the Barrington High School boys track team finish third overall at the state championship. The Eagles scored 111 points and were the best public school team in the state — BHS finished behind first place LaSalle (147 points) and second place Bishop Hendricken (113 points).
Noonan scored key points for the BHS girls team, as it finished in fourth place overall. Coaches said it was the team’s best finish in years at the state championship.
This year’s state meet took place over two days — a thunderstorm on Saturday afternoon forced officials to delay the second half of the meet to Sunday morning. It was not clear if the delay created an additional challenge for Barrington High School athletes; some of the seniors on the BHS boys and girls teams had to attend the graduation ceremony, which began at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Noonan said the pause in the action may have actually helped her.
“We both took one jump at 11 (feet) 6 (inches) yesterday (Saturday) and then they told us we had to evacuate,” Noonan said. “So we left and we came back here (on Sunday) with only two attempts left. It was a little stressful, but it was good — I cleared it on the first one.
“Honestly, I think it was a little better. I think I was getting a little tired yesterday so I think the break really helped me regroup and get ready for the last jumps.”
Satisfield struggled through a sore ankle on Saturday, but returned on Sunday ready to shine.
“I just felt great. Had a good breakfast. Coming off yesterday with an ankle injury, I had some R and R, rest and recovery. That’s the most important thing you have to do. If you want to compete and you want to perform how you can perform, rest and recovery, that’s the most important thing,” Satisfield said.
Satisfield also won the long jump event at states, with a top jump of 22 feet, four inches.
Barrington High School’s 4x800 relay team of Brady Andrew, Marius Bonard, Michael Chun and Henry Stockwell outran the rest of the field to finish first.
