The construction of the new splash pad in 2019 — there are sprinklers that are activated by foot-pedals — was part of a larger town project. The first part of the project included the installation of a shade structure near the picnic area at Police Cove Park, as well as the relocation of a sculpture.
The second part of the project was the construction of the splash pad. The town paid Catalano Construction about $138,000 for the work, but a large portion of the funding came from a RI Department of Environmental Management grant. The remaining funding came from the Police Cove capital reserve account and the town's Parks and Trails capital reserve account.
Last year, town officials said they were planning to add a few more enhancements to the splash pad section of the park. Barrington Town Manager Jim Cunha had said a fence and some shrubbery would be installed between the splash pad and the nearby roadway. There has also been some discussion about moving the wires that run overhead near the splash pad.
