Gov. Gina Raimondo is likely to delay the opening of the school year by several weeks, when she holds a news conference scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 12.
In an interview conducted with WJAR 10 Tuesday, Gov. Raimondo said the state is not ready to safely re-open schools, which had been scheduled to start Monday, Aug. 31.
“We’re not opening until we’re ready,” she said in the interview. “I want schools to open. We need to get these kids back in school. It will be safe to get them back in school if we do it right. We need a little more time. The planning to get this right with the testing, the transportation, the mask wearing, extra space in the classroom.”
“A week from now we’ll know more.”
She said the re-opening is being pushed back for several specific reasons. Teachers need to feel more comfortable returning to the classroom, health officials need to ensure that there is sufficient testing for the coronavirus in place, and parents and students need to be more prepared.
Several big unknowns, she said, include whether there will be additional federal funding to help pay for school re-opening costs, and whether the National Guard will make additional buses available.
“Once we have that information, we’ll be in a better position to make some final decisions,” she said. “We just need more time to get ready.”
“It’s just a lot of planning. I promised everybody we’re not going to do it until we’re ready.”
