EAST PROVIDENCE — Providence Country Day School held its 2020 commencement event on June 10, included among those to receive their diplomas a number of East Bay area seniors. Graduates drove up to receive their diplomas one at a time while guests tuned in through FM radio and online video streams.

PCD commends the Class of 2020 and their completion of their high school careers amid a pandemic requiring social distancing, virtual learning, and the cancellation of sports seasons, senior projects, and proms.

Barrington — Devin Dembrow, Boston University, Award for Excellence in History and Award for Excellence in Physics; Erkan Gao, University of California, San Diego

Bristol — Paige Dauplaise, Washington College; Emerson Kopsack, Syracuse University, Judith A. Speyer Art Award and the Gerald B. Woodruff Progress Award

East Providence — Joshua DeMacedo, Dean College, Coaches Citation; Matthew Smith, Rhode Island College, Athletic Director Citation

Providence — Odelia Kabessa, Temple University, Coaches Citation

Riverside — Hope Laiter, Dean College, Suzanne Bailey Women's Athletic Award and the Kenneth R. Graboys Community Service Award

Rumford — Margaux Bedford, University of Rhode Island, Coaches Citation; Illiana Britto, University of Rhode Island, Charles S. Gwynne Award; Olivia Kelton, Assumption College, Charlotte T. Stratton Theater Award and the Faculty Citation

Seekonk — Elliott Trendell, Brown University, Athletic Director Citation, the Richard S. Stanzler Memorial Prize, and the Class of 1929 Gold Medal for Excellence

Tiverton — Gregory Demetrakas, Temple University, Award for Excellence in Spanish, the Athletic Director Citation, and the William R. Giunta Memorial Book Award

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
